Yingluck Shinawatra

The Democrat Party will ask a House committee to investigate possible business connections between Prime Minister Deputy Democrat spokeswoman Mallika Boonmeetrakul said yesterday the party's legal team is gathering evidence to petition a House committee on economic affairs to investigate the assets of Srettha Thavisin, president of Sansiri Plc, and those of the premier during the past seven months to determine if there were business links between the two.

Ms Mallika demanded Ms Yingluck explain herself over the meeting with Mr Srettha at the Four Seasons Hotel in Bangkok last week.

On Friday, Mr Srettha confirmed he had met with Ms Yingluck at the hotel last week.

The property tycoon said the meeting involved six or seven other people and was not a one-to-one discussion with Ms Yingluck.

The appearance of the prime minister at the five-star hotel sparked public attention after businessman Ekkayuth Anchanbutr claimed he was assaulted by the prime minister's security guard while he was sitting at a coffee shop in the hotel.

Democrat spokesman Chavanond Intarakomalyasut yesterday said it was wrong for the prime minister to meet a property developer while her government is formulating its policy on land as part of its flood-prevention measures.

Skipping a House session to pursue personal matters was also a slight to parliament, Mr Chavanond said.

"If a similar incident took place in another country, the prime minister would have to resign," Mr Chavanond said.

Ms Yingluck yesterday posted a message on her Facebook page calling on Thai people to respect the role of women.

"What is saddening is that Thais disdain each other and take advantage of each other in terms of gender, careers, personal benefits or political gains," she said.

Pheu Thai Party deputy spokesman Jirayu Huangsap said the Democrats were playing political gamesmanship aimed at discrediting the prime minister. and the president of property developer Sansiri Plc.
