Meghan Melnyk

College student body president quits job because she's 'burnt out'... and then 'robs bank armed with a knife'

A woman who abruptly quit as a college student body president because she was 'burnt out' has been arrested for robbing a bank.

Within a matter of weeks of resigning from her position with the body at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Meghan Melnyk, 27, allegedly held up a credit union.

The communications major is accused of threatening a teller in a note saying she was armed and demanding cash on Wednesday.

Calgary police detective Stu Keown told ABC News that Melnyk, disguising herself with makeup, sunglasses and a stocking cap, made off with an undisclosed amount of money.

Her car was later spotted by a police helicopter after a employee at the Servus Credit Union had written down her license plate and she was arrested.

In her PT Cruiser police found a knife they believe was used in the robbery, reports ABC News.

The detective said the case is 'highly unusual', adding that most bank robbers in his region tend to be supporting drug habits.

But police remain puzzled by Melnyk’s motive since she refused to cooperate after her arrest, according to ABC News.

The student is said to have a number of outstanding arrest warrants for fraud, forgery and violating probation after being found in possession of a stolen car, says the report.

At the time of her resignation as student president, Melnyk told the Mount Royal student newspaper saying: 'I'm so tired. I mean, I love this job, but I’m just at that point where I've given so much of myself that I’m very much burnt out.'

Melnyk’s former colleagues on the students’ association were shocked by her arrest.

Vice president Michelle Dennis told ABC News: 'We are as shocked as everyone else. We certainly have no idea why she chose to act in this way. We do hope that she gets the help and support that she needs.'

'I think the shockwaves reverberate through the entire university and the student body,' Mount Royal University communications professor David Taras told the Calgary Herald.

'I'm sure SAMRU is just scratching their heads. This is jaw-dropping news.'

Melnyk has been remanded in custody pending a bail hearing.
