iOS 5 Untethered Jailbreak: Top 5 Jailbreak Utilities Released Till Date

The latest untethered jailbreak "Absinthe" was released yesterday and the jailbreak community is going gaga over the latest tool.

Following the launch of the latest exploit, IBTimes would like to revisit all top five software, including "Absinthe", as all these untethered software have done an amazing job in terms of jailbreaking the Apple devices running the iOS 5 and 5.0.1...

1. Absinthe

After a long wait, the Chronic Dev Team, with support from Pod2g and the iPhone-Dev Team, has finally produced the new untethered jailbreak "Absinthe," which will allow users to jailbreak their iPhone 4S and iPad 2.

The supported devices and firmware for "Absinthe" are: iPhone 4S running iOS 5.0, 5.0.1 (9A405 and 9A406) and iPad 2 Wifi/GSM/CDMA running iOS 5.0.1.


"Absinthe" has been released for Mac OS X computers as of now. The jailbreak for the Windows and Linux versions will come soon.

Download and extract Absinthe from the .zip and run the executable file. Here are the download links:

2. Corona

"Corona", one of the latest jailbreak utilities, was designed by the Chronic Dev Team. "Corona" is a Cydia package that allows users of the iPhone 4, the 3Gs, the iPod Touch 4 and 3 or an iPad to have an untethered jailbreak.

The name of the jailbreak tool "Corona" is an anagram of "Racoon", which is the IPsec IKE daemon that comes by default with iOS and is started when the user sets up an IPsec connection. Pod2g discovered vulnerability in the "raccoon" configuration and utilized it for jailbreaking A4 devices.

3. Sn0wbreeze

"Sn0wbreeze", developed by Canadian hacker iH8sn0w, was first released in January 2010 as a beta version. The updated version of "Sn0wbreez 2.9", released by iH8sn0w this year, allows users to perform an untethered jailbreak on the iPhone 3G/4, the iPod Touch 3G/4G and the iPad 1 (running iOS 5.0.1.). Later, to overcome some issues with version 2.9, as reported by users, iH8sn0w went back to the drawing board and released Sn0wBreeze 2.9.1.

4. Redsn0w

Originally known as "QuickPwn", the "Redsn0w" utility was developed by the iPhone Dev Team. The first version (version 0.7) was used to jailbreak the iPhone 2G. Later, version 0.9 beta 3 was released for Windows and Mac OS X and Redsn0w was used to jailbreak iOS 3.0. Version 0.9.2 could jailbreak all iDevices with iOS 3.0 through 3.1.2 on Windows and Mac OS X, as well as 3.1.3 on S5L8900 devices. Last year, when Apple Inc. released iOS 5, "Redsn0w" also launched 0.9.9 tethered tool to jailbreak iOS 5 on iPhone 4 all versions, the iPhone 3GS, iPad 1.

Finally, with the launch of Apple's newest operating system - iOS 5.0.1 - the latest version, "RedSn0w 0.9.10b1" - an untethered break - has also been launched by Pod2G. RedSn0w 0.9.10b1 supports the iPhone 4 (GSM and CDMA), the iPhone 3GS, the iPod Touch 4G and the iPod Touch 3G. Later, the iPhone Dev Team revised "RedSn0w 9.10b1" (first 0.9.10b2, then 0.9.10b3) to fix problems found in the 0.9.10b1 version.

5. PwnageTool

"PwnageTool", released in April 2008, is an iPhone jailbreaking application for Mac OS X . The fifth and last major update of the tool took place on December 27, 2011.

The latest version of "PwnageTool" can jailbreak iOS version 5.0.1 (untethered) for the iPhone 3GS, the iPhone 4 (GSM), the iPod Touch 3G, the iPod Touch 4G and the original iPad but cannot jailbreak Apple A5.
